RE: Dalton Highway

You'll find a pile of information on the Dalton (including an excellent BLM guide to the highway), here.

RE: Winter travel to Alaska

The Canadian authorities track you pretty well when you travel in the winter. If they don't hear from you regularly they start checking to be sure you are okay.
Sorry, Frank, but "the Canadian authorities" (whoever that might be) have NO IDEA who is on the highway. I drive the highway regularly in the winter and have for many years. Sometimes it's a dream trip and sometimes more of a nightmare, so be prepared for absolutely anything.

RE: Revelstoke

A lot of the Husky stations don't keep their dumps open in the winter anymore. I used to be able to rely on them to dump my charter bus, but have a heck of a time finding a place in recent yeras. The Revelstoke one was snowed/frozen over the last time I tried.

RE: Buying an RV in Canada & bringing it back to USA

I just did some US-Canada searches using http://www.rvsearch.com and http://www.autotrader.ca and and US prices are, as always, much lower for comparable units.

Stewart-Cassiar and the Telegraph Creek Road

I know that many of you will be taking the Stewart-Cassiar Highway either going to or back home from Alaska next summer, but most of you will drive past the road to Telegraph Creek without even knowing it exists. I've been going in to Telegraph Creek by road and air for many years, and as a result of 2 trips in this summer guiding a film crew, have just greatly expanded my Guide to the Telegraph Creek Road.
This is NOT a road for big rigs - take your camper trucks, small Cs and toads only. It's gravel, it's narrow, it winds around and around with grades up to 20% (!!!) and there are some looooong unguarded drops. But the rewards are huge, as you'll see in that guide.
The area will be getting much more notice next year as the result of a new travelogue about northern Canada, starring British actor/comedian Billy Connolly (that's the film crew I was working with). The film is expected to be released in April 2009.
If you’re ever looking to really get off the beaten track for a few days, add this route to your short list!

RE: Alaska Highway

I personally think any road you don't get stuck in is a good road so take that into consideration when you ask somebody how is the road ahead. good luck
In Skagway a couple of days ago I overheard a couple from BC telling the waitress how bad the drive through the White Pass was. I had to butt in and tell them that a half-hour before, I had told the Customs officer how good the drive was - snow and wind but no drifting, and visibility never less than a couple of hundred yards :)

RE: Tours and pets

I've never seen a tour here that had a dog on it. The "comfort dog" scam is every bit as trashy as forging a handicapped-parking sticker :(

RE: Cell Service

There is no signal in almost all of northern BC and the Yukon except within a mile or so of small Yukon communities and within 25 miles or so of Whitehorse.

RE: Winter Olympics

Normally there are thousands of private homes opened to guests as part of the Olympics organizing. We did it in Whitehorse when the Winter Games were held here last year - rented out our house (in our case, to competitors' families) and went to our cabin for the duration. That lodging system probably hasn't been set up for Vancouver 2010 yet, but is worth a look.

RE: Sour Toe Cocktail Club, Dawson City, YT

I got Hyderized when I moved to Stewart in 1975 to work for Granduc Copper, then did the Sourtoe ceremony with Captain Dick Stevenson (who originated it) in 1985, 1990 and 1991. Now I'm older and smarter, "they" (my wife and parents) say :)

RE: Be aware border crossing

"Thank goodness for home land security."
yep...for sure....mind you...it was the Canadian variety, but still just as effective.
But the Canadian borders only got tough because the US gave Canada such grief about our slack borders, if you remember post-9/11.

RE: Highway Information

I took a rental minivan from Whitehorse to Tok thru Dawson. No problem on the Canadian side, but it'll be along time before I visit that part of AK. The soft shoulders don't give you a lot of room when you meet a 5 ton DOT truck & you're on the outer side of the road.
LOL - try meeting a B-train fuel tanker there when you're driving a 42-foot MCI :)

RE: B/B or Motel in Stewert..??

The "King Eddie" is pretty run down - the rooms and the restaurant. It's clean, but badly worn (like me some days). Even in the good days (1970s) it was very basic. It is the cheapest place in town, though, so will work for those who want to save money. It's also the only place to get an early breakfast.
If any of you would like some background on Stewart, see my article on the Granduc mine disaster at http://explorenorth.com/granduc.html

RE: B/B or Motel in Stewert..??

For the past 5 years or so I've stayed at the Ripley Creek Inn whenever I go to Stewart. Unique and highly recommended - http://ripleycreekinn.homestead.com/ The same people own the best restaurant in town, right across the street (the Bitter Creek Cafe - though it's much more than the name "cafe" suggests).

A Newbie Look at RVing

Some of you might enjoy this email I got from my sister this morning :)
------------------
Spent Saturday night at this place...
http://www.sicamouschamber.bc.ca/Ads/Whispering.html
****'s brother **** & family are there for two weeks and so we (with dogs) spent the night in Gord's massive motorhome to visit.
Campsites side by side filled with the most expensive array of motorhomes, trailers and pickup trucks imaginable. Only Alberta license plates as far as I could see.
Slide outs, carpets, propane campfires, DVDs playing, dogs in their big kennels with canopies erected over them and fans on them. My god, is this what camping and RVing is?
Oh, and the smell of sewage just before 11 am checkout on Sunday is overwhelming.
Yuck.

You really don't have enough time to take the ToW/Dawson detour - there's just no point to taking that route unless you have time to savour the experience.
